Caterpillar and Butterfly Puppets

We had so much fun playing with these little puppets! This is a simple craft that you could hang and decorate as art or use for play and storytelling. It’s up to you to see where you and your little’s imagine takes you.

Here’s what you’ll need…

  • Scissors
  • Paper Plate
  • Crayons
  • Hole Punch
  • Pipe Cleaner
  • Google Eyes (optional)
  • String
  • Stick

Here’s what you’ll do.

Using your scissors, cut the paper plate in half.

Next, you will cut a semi-circle around the inside of your plate. The outer edge will be your caterpillars! The inside we are going to transform into your butterfly!

Place the two semi-circles on top of each other so edges line up. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Next fold in half, it will look like 1/4 of a circle. Now cut a design to imitate butterfly wings.

TA_DA!!

Next you will want to take your hole punch and put two holes in the middle of your butterfly.

You will thread your pipe cleaner through the holes and wrap to create the butterfly antennas.

Now it’s time to decorate!! We used crayons and googly eyes to keep it simple, but you could really use just about anything. We thread some string around the pipe clean and tied the butterfly to a stick so it could flutter and fly. London had a blast running around the yard.

Another idea for these cuties would be to tell stories or use for play. London and I named our caterpillars and played and told stories using the caterpillar and butterfly. You could even think about making a cocoon but rolling a whole paper plate into a cone like shape to walk through the butterfly life stages.

Whatever you all decide to do, I hope you enjoy! Have a great week and hope to see you back here soon!

xxoo,

El
